Panasonic DMC-GF3 Review
This Panasonic DMC-GF3 is available via Amazon by clicking on this link
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3 Compact System Cameras (CSC) is now its entry level camera. A smaller and more simplified camera than the DMC-GF2.
It still benefits from a DSLR interchangeable lens system, with a point-and-shoot camera’s compactness and lighter weight. Intelligent auto features can help take great photos.
The DMC-GF3 image sensor is based on the DMC-GF2 one and remains at 12.1MP resolution. But a new image processor improves the speed of autofocus on this model and the continuous shooting rate rises up to 3.8 frames per second – a 20% improvement.
Missing compared to the DMC-GF2 is the flash hot shoe and EVF port, but if you want the smallest you probably don’t want a big flashgun to carry with you too.

For those of you that miss the tactile feel of a traditional DSLR mode dial, the DMC-GF3 offers an innovative mode thumb wheel that quickly cycles though all available modes with visual feedback provided on the large 3 touch-enabled LCD.

Canon T3i vs Canon T2i
The Canon T3i (full title Canon EOS Rebel T3i) (Canon EOS 600D in Europe) is the direct replacement for the Canon T2i (Canon EOS 550D in Europe). Looking at the specification of the two there seems to be little difference, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but there are differences. Internally the Canon Rebel T3i is little changed from it predecessor which explains the similarity of spec.
Looking at one of the most important parts of any camera, the image sensor, it has a 18MP resolution, as does the T2i, 7D and 60D, which is quite impressive even with today’s drive for ever increasing Mega Pixel range. Canon have gone to some trouble to stress that it’s not an identical chip. Nevertheless the ISO range also remains exactly the same, going from 100-6400, plus it can be further expanded to an ISO equivalent of 12,800 at its H setting.
It is the same image processor DIGIC IV that’s used in a range of other Canon DSLRs. This allows you to capture 14-bit Raw files and gives a burst rate of 3.7fps (no improvement over the T2i), with the same 63-zone iFCL metering system (first seen in the Canon 7D) and with 9-point AF system (with the central AF point cross-type), which was also used in its predecessor the Rebel T2i.
Canon T3i Gets Adjustable LCD Screen
Whilst the Canon T3i does share a great deal of technology with the T2i and the 60D for that matter,
there have been some very useful changes. The most obvious change to the camera being with the rear screen. The excellent 3 inch screen with 3:2 aspect ratio and a screen resolution of 1040k-dots as used on the T2i has been retained. However the Canon T3i now comes equipped this excellent screen but with tilt and swivel positioning, to make framing shots so much easier. If you have seen the 60D’s vari-angle screen, you’ll appreciate that this is a welcome change.
The screen on the T3i can be swung out from the body by upto 180° and can be rotated upto 270°. So no matter what you’re recording, whether still images or video, the T3i provides you with easy access to its 3.0″ Clear View LCD monitor. It just flips-out when required and is adjustable for a variety of angles for shooting those otherwise difficult to frame shots. It is also of course useful for reviewing shots already taken too.
This camera also features an eye-level viewfinder for more intuitive composition of shots, a way that many people prefer especially in bright sunshine.
As so many people now like to take video without having to carry a dedicated video camera, it will also be no surprise to find that Canon T3i can also record full HD video at 1080P and with a choice of 30, 25 and 24fps capture. This video ability and quality will be enough for many people.
Another useful feature is that if you’ve got a compatible flashgun, then you can now use the Rebel T3i’s built-in flash to trigger and control it wirelessly. This is useful for a host of potential lighting techniques and it is a welcome feature to be included on a camera of this class.
Summary Canon T3i vs Canon T2i
To summarise the Canon T3i camera continues a long line of high quality compact DSLRs, with the Rebel tradition of easy operation, compact design and no-compromise performance. A very worthy successor to the T2i . If you already have the Canon T2i is it worth the upgrade? If you’re happy with the T2i performance and you have to upgrade, you’ll be happy with the T3i improvements. Otherwise you’ll really have to consider how important the improvements are to your photography. If you are thinking about entering the SLR market this is a very good camera to start out with.

This Olympus PEN E-PL2 is available via Amazon by Clicking on this Link.
Olympus PEN E-PL2 continues the PEN family’s legacy of a small, light and simple design, intuitive interface and DSLR image quality. It boasts the same 12Mp sensor but adds a raft of improvements.
This Micro Four Thirds Olympus PEN E-PL2 comes with the new Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) ED m14-42mm f3.5/5.6 zoom lens. This new kit lens has a smooth, silent and quick inner focus mechanism to make it exceptionally fast and nearly silent when recording high-definition movie. A significant improvement over the PEN E-PL1.
The all-button operation of the E-PL1 has been ditched, in favor of a more conventional combination button/dial approach. The LCD screen is better too – its size has increased to 3 inches and it doubles in resolution. The innovative Live Guide mode, first seen in the E-PL1 has been improved too.

This camera is the perfect travel companion and great for street photography. It doesn’t draw too much attention due to its size, styling and small lenses. The in-body image stabilization is fantastic as is the built in flash. The flash is designed in a way that allows it to be bounced off the ceiling, allowing for a more natural look.
Here are some great features of the Olympus PEN E-PL2 :
- Interchangeable lens digital camera with powerful Live MOS sensor; Micro Four Thirds format
- Kit includes new Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) ED m14-42mm f3.5/5.6 zoom lens (28mm-84mm equivalent)

- Capture images and HD video to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)
- Pop-up Flash
- In-body image stabilization
- ‘Live Guide II’ interface works in still and movie capture modes
- Eye-detection AF
- Direct record movie button
- 720p 30fps HD video (AVI Motion JPEG format)
- ISO 200-6400
- Accessory port for add-ons such as electronic viewfinder and new ‘PENpal’ bluetooth transmitter
- Weight: 11.2 Ounces
The other nice thing abou the PEN E-PL2 is that it will take accessories and a remote shutter release. You can, and probably should add the attachable viewfinder. It will also take external microphones, which helps with much higher audio when recording video. That sounds strange, but it’s true. As a video camera, it’s pretty equivalent to current entry level SLRs.
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Olympus PEN E-PL2 :
I bought an Olympus PEN E-PL2 w/ kit lens and with a Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens separately last week and since then cannot let go of it. I take it everywhere I go, and I shoot everything, anything that moves and doesn’t move, day and night, outdoor and indoor. The photos blow my mind away. Upon seeing photos, people are keen to ask what camera I use.

Compact System Cameras – What The Best Offer You!
Compact System Cameras (CSCs) are the digital cameras bridging the gap between the point and shoot (P & S) Compact Cameras and the Digital SLR preferred by professionals.
Size Reduction
As the name suggests their compactness is just one reason they are fast becoming popular with so many people, amateurs and professionals. The small size when compared to SLR cameras is as a result of removing the reflex mirror mechanism. Removing the mirror mechanism means that the camera body is so much smaller as a result.
This reduction in size means it is far more portable than a digital SLR . Therefore you will be more likely to take the camera to places where the larger camera would be less convenient.
Compact system cameras are also proving popular as back-up cameras for professionals and even proving good enough as a main camera for some original client work situations.
At first glance the camera body looks out of proportion compared to the lens and you would think it would feel unbalanced. However once in the hand it is very stable and comfortable to hold, which is not what you would imagine.
Intelligent Camera Systems for Ease of Use
Compact System Cameras come with a lot of intelligent features. These have been added to make taking good photographs easier. Features include image stabilization to help prevent blurred images from camera shake. There are different automatic exposure modes plus auto focus, rapid shooting, easy panoramic shooting etc.
Plus these settings are generally quite easy to access and change quickly with using buttons, thumb wheels or touch screens and menus.
Interchangeable Lenses
The System part of the name refers to the very useful fact that you can change lenses, you are not limited to the fixed lens of compact cameras. This gives you much greater flexibility for taking a range and quality of photographs that would not otherwise be possible.
Interchangeable lenses, ranging from ultra-wide-angle to telephoto lenses allow for greater creativity. Plus there are even compatible 3D lenses available for some compact system cameras that would allow you to enjoy viewing 3D images on a 3D television, great for bringing life to those holiday shots.
Large Image Sensor
Another feature of the digital compact system camera and where it scores over compact cameras is in the size of its image sensor; usually compact cameras only have a small image sensor. The CSC is able to accommodate a large sensor that you would normally only find in a Digital SLR camera. We are not just talking a little bit bigger but in excess of 10x bigger!
The larger sensor in the CSC means that the quality of the image will remain high with low noise levels in all but the poorest lighting conditions, long after the image quality in digital compact cameras would have begun to deteriorate.
Video
As you would perhaps expect, these versatile digital cameras in the CSC range are capable of taking video too, in some cases full 1080i high definition.
What Do You Want?
If you are fairly new photography or just want to take great photographs with minimum effort the Compact System Camera could well be for you. They have easy to use controls ,interchangeable lens and automatic intelligent features that will do most of the work for you.
For the Serious Amateur or Professional
However, if as your confidence or ability grows, these cameras will allow you to take increasing control over your photography for even greater creativity. Not forgetting the ability to use different lenses, which can be bought as required. Although for many, one of these cameras bought with a lens package may be all the camera you’ll ever need.

Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V 10.2MP CMOS Digital Camera:
There’s a reason this camera is selling out everywhere at the moment. I’ve had more fun taking pictures the last week than I have ever had with any other camera.
It’s extremely fast and responsive. Pre-focused shots are virtually instantaneous and even with focus you’ll almost always get the shot as it’s very quick. This is a huge improvement over older cameras I’ve used. G. Scott

Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D
The contest of Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D, or Canon EOS 7D to give it its full name is not an easy contest to judge. Although many reviews comparing these two digital SLR cameras have been done there can be no clear winner.
Although paired together these digital SLR cameras have what for many people is a significant price difference, maybe a couple of hundred dollars.
The Nikon D7000 specification compares well with the more expensive Canon 7D and in some areas betters it. One such area is the memory cards feature, the Nikon has dual card slots (2x SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards) which almost all pros and semi-pros appreciate, but this feature is absent on this version of the Canon EOS 7D. Although not shown in this photo it also has a built-in flash like the Canon.
Another area where the Nikon D7000 scores over the Canon, for those people who like to point and shoot, is regarding taking videos. The Nikon has an AF-F focusing mode, this allows autofocus during movie mode, this is not an option on the Canon 7D. However more serious users will appreciate having the option to shoot more flexibly with the Canon. The Canon has a range of frame rates that serious movie shooters should find suits their needs better.
Another advantage of the Canon EOS 7D is its high continuous burst rate; at 8fps it is the fastest DSLR for its size.
Talking of size, very similar, but on body weight the Canon is about 130g heavier.
As you can already see it is very difficult to say that one of these cameras can be declared an outright winner, although you will probably find the Canon EOS 7D will appeal to the professional photographer simply because of greater control over settings and probably overall is slightly more advanced. The Nikon likewise probably appeals more to the serious amateur or semi-professional photographer. But don’t be unduly influenced by these previous two statements, its what meets your requirements and ability is most important.
So do you really want or need the greater control of the Canon or are you happy to let the camera do most of the work and still take great photos.
Whichever of the two cameras you choose you are going to get a camera that will give you a great deal of satisfaction. It has the ability to meet the needs of the most discerning photographer.
If you already own a Nikon or Canon that has compatible lenses for these cameras it will very likely mean you are going to stay with the same brand. Otherwise unless you really need a feature that only one of these cameras has it could turn out to be very much more expensive to change makes.
Lenses are of course something you really need to consider anyway, what are your requirements now and in the future. You can buy both of these cameras in packages that usually include a zoom lens, which for many people will be enough; also you usually get a better value for money deal if that is so.
